Reminder: Homework includes bringing a Letter Bag every week!

Letter of the Week: Zz! Please bring in an item that begins with the z/.

Help them to write all 3 clues on their own! Use sight words and phonetic spelling! Practice reciting the clues so we can share with them with the class. Thanks for your support!

Spring is just around the corner!

With Spring just around the corner, we learned about what spring brings! They wrote their ideas in their Spring books using adjectives about the season. Spring brings flowers, baby animals, and of course-eggs!  We learned what eggs are used for, besides eating, and also did some “egg” periments!

Is it raw or cooked?!

“Scrambled” eggs! The kiddos had to unscramble their sight words!

Ayli brought her chickens to school!

These oviparous animals are too cute!

Rainbow eggs, who knew?

We learned about what animals come from eggs and learned they are called, oviparous! After reading the book, Chickens Aren’t the Only Ones, we sorted oviparous and viviparous animals! Here are some fun activities we did this week!

Birds come from eggs!

Sting rays come from eggs!

A penguin is from an egg, but a raccoon is not!

Ee was our letter again this week and we focused on the long /e/ and vowel teams as in green, seal, seed. They learned about the “two vowels” rule. Here’s a fun poem we sang to remember the rule! (Notice our two new sight words highlighted!) We made a face on the 'talking' vowel that says its name and feet on the ‘walking’ vowel that is silent and read several long /e/ words!

I see two vowels,
I see two vowels,
I hear one, I hear one
The first one does the talking
The second keeps on walking
Yes, indeed! Yes indeed!

Two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking!

Check out these awesome finger flashlights!
The kids had so much fun reading their books and looking for long vowel words!

Of course we celebrated St. Patrick’s Day, but unfortunately those leprechauns were too sneaky and hard to catch! Maybe next year!!  Thank you to those who brought in potatoes for our potato taste test! Our class favorite were the french fries!
Our favorite potato dish bar graph!

Sailing away...

This week we learned about the letter Ee and its short and long sounds! We’ve been practicing with word families and rhyming words (-ed, -en). Sometimes this vowel can get confused with /a/ or /i/, but we are learning to hear the /e/ within words when reading and spelling phonetically!  Our word this week was “was”! so we practiced using it along with our other sight words in sentences.

Gwyneth used old and new sight words in her sentences!

Speaking of the letter Ee, we did a few “e”xperiments with boats! Check out some of the fun activities we did!

Will it sink or float? Using items from our classroom,
the kiddos made predictions about whether they will sink or float!

Some great pictures and fantastic labeling!

Each student made a boat of foil and predicted how many pennies it could hold before it sank!
Many were so surprised that their boats could hold more pennies than they thought!

We did a directed draw watercolor picture of sailboats!
They all drew the same scene, but each picture was unique!

Ayli wants to take a speed boat to Hawaii! Can I come?

As a culmination of our transportation unit, the students cut out pictures of different types of transportation and glued them in the air, water, and land for the cover of their Transportation books.

Avery’s cover looks great with her different modes of transportation!

For the final page of their Transportation books, they wrote an opinion piece about what they think is the best transportation. I asked them to give me reasons to support their opinion and they took on the challenge!

Abbey wrote several reasons why a submarine is the best transportation.
I love how she wrote “I can draw pictures of the animals!"

Chugging along...

As we continue with our unit, we learned more about trains! They worked really hard on a project, Trains Go! It was an art project that integrated sight word practice, tracking, and prepositions. Have your child read it with you!

Trains can go through the country....

around the mountains, over the bridge and into the city!

We also had fun with some Dr. Suess activities! After reading Green Eggs and Ham, the students wrote what they like to eat and made up a friends’ name that rhymes with it!
Noah wrote: I like to eat green eggs and ice cream.
I like to eat them with my friend Wsecream!
To go along with a familiar favorite, 1 Fish, 2 Fish Red Fish, Blue Fish,
the students made their own addition story and number sentence! Jaxson wrote: 2 fish, 2 fish, red fish, yellow fish!

Thank you to our community helpers, Mrs. Elaine and Dr. Michelle! Mrs. Elaine came in and shared about her job as an occupational therapist and Dr. Michelle came to talk about her experiences as a life long learner and professor. The kids loved hearing about how they help in our community. Thank you!

Mrs. Weisberg shared some ways she helps her students with fine motor skills!
Abbey is popping the air pockets to strengthen the muscles in her hands!

We had a special visit from the California Highway Patrol!
He shared great safety tips and answered a lot of great questions!
